Language/Longing/Life

Language, Books, Mountains, Knowledge, Quotes, Coffee, Poetry, Travel, and Celebration-of-beauty-in-life. I'm getting my MA in linguistics with a focus on language documentation at the University of Montana, Missoula. I love reading all kinds of books but my favorites are memoirs, travelogues, and historical fiction. I love writing and I love beautiful things and good people.
I have a fitblr/runblr at skinnyintellectual.tumblr.com. So if you're a fitblr and I follow you, you may be more interested in that blog than this one. Though, hey, maybe not!

  • Joy is in the ears that hear: Grammar Nazi's

I know you think that correcting people makes you look really clever; using a set of rules that must have been made by a God to be oh so important and restrict creativity and try and…

The plural of ‘nazi’ example is funny because it actually has nothing to do with grammar. It has to do with writing conventions. And that is a common problem - equating speech with writing. Writing is secondary to speech.

Think about it: how do you pronounce ‘nazi’s’ versus ‘nazis’? The exact same. Now, if you were to say ‘nazi’ as the plural, then that would be incorrect as far as descriptive English rules go. The funny thing is, though, that a native English speaker wouldn’t say that, just like they would never say ‘a the man’. There’s a big difference between that and, say, splitting an infinitive.

Ahh, a futile battle. Until people start thinking.
